Arlo

Mixed Ancestry

“Arlo was a rescue and almost lost a leg due to a neglected splint. A local vet painstakingly sheltered him for 6 months to avoid amputating the limb and on his first adoption opportunity at a local Petco we found him as the only pup still not adopted despite how sweet and amiable a personality he presented. We immediately got him and our other dog Lynnie Rue immediately loved him and they groom and kiss each other constantly. We couldn't have been happier for this little guy.”

C1

Arlo’s Haplogroup

Congratulations, C1 is a very exotic female lineage! It is more closely associated with maternal lineages found in wolves, foxes and jackals than with other dog lineages. So it seems dogs in this group have a common male dog ancestor who, many thousands of years ago, mated with a female wolf! This is not a common lineage in any breed, though a good number of German Shepherds and Doberman Pinchers are C1. It is also found in breeds as diverse as Peruvian Inca Orchids and Pekingese; it is rarely found amongst Labrador Retrievers, Border Collies, Siberian Huskies, or Cocker Spaniels. Despite its fascinating origins, it is widely distributed around the globe, and even shows up frequently among Peruvian village dogs. It almost certainly survived at low frequency in Europe for millennia and then was dispersed outside of Europe by colonialism, though not as successfully as some other lineages.

C7/10

Arlo’s Haplotype

Part of the C1 haplogroup, this haplotype occurs most commonly in Pekingese, Boston Terriers, and Rat Terriers.

The C1 maternal line is commonly found in Jackals.

A1

Arlo’s Haplogroup

A1 is the male lineage in several breeds that aren't very closely related to each other. Gordon Setters, Newfoundlands, and Miniature Schnauzers all had male founders from this paternal line, and now many males in those breeds carry their Y chromosome. Each of these breeds started in the past 200-300 years, and their founders must have included dogs that trace back to the same male ancestors deeper in dog evolutionary time, stretching all the way back to when dogs were first domesticated in Central Asia about 15,000 years ago. Unlike many Y chromosome (male) lineages found in European and recent American breeds, only one village dog (in Alaska) carries an A1 Y chromosome, indicating that the breeds from this lineage probably didn't travel around the world with European colonization as much as some other breeds.

Ha.1

Arlo’s Haplotype

The lone member of the A1 haplogroup, this haplotype occurs in Newfoundlands, Miniature Schnauzers, Gordon Setters, and village dogs in Alaska.

The Newfoundland is from the A1 paternal line.
