Chow Chow (48.3% unresolved)

“Muppet was first picked up as a stray by animal control. His fur was one painful mat and he was so scared they wanted to euthanize him. A kind volunteer went to bat for him and was able to transfer him to a rescue after about seven months. At the rescue, he was adopted and returned twice over the course of more than a year. He joined our family in March 2016. Needless to say, there is a lot about Muppet's history that we don't know, but we're excited to learn what we can through Embark.”

What’s in that Supermutt? There may be small amounts of DNA from these distant ancestors:

Chow Chow

This distinctive-looking dog breed has a proud, independent spirit that some describe as catlike. Often aloof and suspicious of strangers, the Chow Chow may not be a cuddle buddy, but for the right person, they are a fiercely loyal companion.

Health Summary

warn icon

Muppet inherited one variant that you should learn more about.

And one variant that you should tell your vet about.

Degenerative Myelopathy, DM

warn icon

Muppet inherited both copies of the variant we tested

What does this result mean?

We do not know whether this increases the risk that Muppet will develop this disease.

Scientific Basis

Research studies for this variant have been based on dogs of other breeds. Not enough dogs with the breeds in Muppet have been studied to know whether or not this variant will increase Muppet’s risk of developing this disease.

What is Degenerative Myelopathy, DM?

The dog equivalent of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, or Lou Gehrig’s disease, DM is a progressive degenerative disorder of the spinal cord. Because the nerves that control the hind limbs are the first to degenerate, the most common clinical signs are back muscle wasting and gait abnormalities.

ALT Activity

warn icon

Muppet inherited one copy of the variant we tested

Why is this important to your vet?

Muppet has one copy of a variant associated with reduced ALT activity as measured on veterinary blood chemistry panels. Please inform your veterinarian that Muppet has this genotype, as ALT is often used as an indicator of liver health and Muppet is likely to have a lower than average resting ALT activity. As such, an increase in Muppet’s ALT activity could be evidence of liver damage, even if it is within normal limits by standard ALT reference ranges.

What is ALT Activity?

Alanine aminotransferase (ALT) is a clinical tool that can be used by veterinarians to better monitor liver health. This result is not associated with liver disease. ALT is one of several values veterinarians measure on routine blood work to evaluate the liver. It is a naturally occurring enzyme located in liver cells that helps break down protein. When the liver is damaged or inflamed, ALT is released into the bloodstream.

A5

Muppet’s Haplogroup

A5 is a rare maternal lineage. It is most numerous among the village dogs of Vietnam, though it is also present in the Chow Chow breed. Additionally, it is found in the Carolina Dog, and attests to this population’s origins among the indigenous native dog.

A204

Muppet’s Haplotype

Part of the A5 haplogroup, this haplotype occurs most commonly in Chow Chows, Bloodhounds, and village dogs in Mexico.

The Chow Chow is a carrier of the rare A5 haplogroup.

A1b

Muppet’s Haplogroup

For most of dog history, this haplogroup was probably quite rare. However, a couple hundred years ago it seems to have found its way into a prized male guard dog in Europe who had many offspring, including the ancestors of many European guard breeds such as Doberman Pinchers, St. Bernards, and Great Danes. Despite being rare, many of the most imposing dogs on Earth have it; strangely, so do many Pomeranians! Perhaps this explains why some Poms are so tough, acting like they're ten times their actual size! This lineage is most commonly found in working dogs, in particular guard dogs. With origins in Europe, it spread widely across other regions as Europeans took their dogs across the world.

Ha.7

Muppet’s Haplotype

Part of the A1b haplogroup, this haplotype is found in village dogs from Lebanon and Indonesia. Among breeds, it is also found in Miniature Schnauzer and Toy Poodle.

Great Danes and Pomeranians have this in common!
