Best Practices: Incorporating Canine Genetic Testing into Patient Health Planning & Treatment

Breeders and veterinarians need to have a great collaborative relationship to succeed in producing the healhiest puppies possible. In this era of new genetic testing, the more we know, the more confusing and expensive appropriate genetic testing can become. This discussion will help sort out how breeders can team up with their veterinary professionals and sort through the overwhelming onslaught of screening for great health.

About the Speaker

Dr. Martina (Marty) Greer received her DVM in 1981 from Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa. In 1982, she and her husband, Dr. Dan Griffiths, founded Veterinary Village in Wisconsin. The clinic has developed a reputation for providing high quality veterinary care and canine breeding and reproductive services. The practice has also contributed to pharmaceutical and nutritional research.

Dr. Greer has a special interest in Pediatrics and Reproduction, and in 2002, she opened a Canine Semen Freezing Center, International Canine Semen Bank – Wisconsin and became Penn-Hip Certified.

In 2005, Dr. Greer was appointed by Governor Jim Doyle to a position on the Veterinary Examining Board of the Department of Safety and Professional Services, where she served for 8 years, and in 2010, she graduated from Marquette Law School. 

Dr. Greer is an author, penning Canine Reproduction and Neonatology, the Winner of Dog Writers Association of America’s Dogwise Best Book Award, and Your Pandemic Puppy. Dr. Greer has been featured in articles in Veterinary Economics and frequently provides digital content as the Revival Animal Health Director of Vet Services.

Dr. Greer serves on the Board of Directors for the Society for Veterinary Medical Ethics, American Veterinary Medical Law Association, and the Society for Theriogenology. She previously served on the Animal Welfare Committee and Education Committee for the Wisconsin Veterinary Medical Association and is the president of the National Animal Interest Alliance.

In addition to her veterinary work, Dr. Greer raises and shows Pembroke Welsh Corgis and Danish-Swedish Farmdogs. Her family has raised 5 puppies for Canine Companions for Independence, a service dog organization.
