About this Breed

The Boykin Spaniel is a new addition to the spaniel family. These dogs originated in South Carolina at the beginning of the 20th century. A peculiar looking spaniel was given to L. Whitaker Boykin in South Carolina for hunting. He continued to breed American Water Spaniels, Spring Spaniels, Pointers, and Chesapeake Bay Retrievers to this one dog’s bloodline until the Boykin Spaniel was born. These guys are admired for their skill at retrieving game both on land and in the water. These are exceptional animals that have an amazing nose and love of water. Boykin Spaniels are docile, intelligent, and compassionate. They are average shedders and just require maintenance to prevent matting. They can be prone to ear infections due to the floppy nature of their ears and their devotion to swimming. With strong leadership, you can not find a better companion than a Boykin Spaniel.
