About this Breed

Originating from the 16th century in the Netherlands, the Drentsche Patrijshond is a proportionally built, medium-sized dog originally bred as a versatile farm and hunting companion. Now one of the rarest pointing dogs in North America, the Drent (as it is more colloquially called) still upholds his reputation as one of the most adaptable, intelligent, and capable hunting breeds.

Historically, Drents have done it all– hunting feather and fur, keeping the farm clear of pests, and even being a companion to children. They are sweet and even-tempered dogs, and they don’t generally require extensive training. However, Drents can be an independent breed with the capacity to be self-thinking, so some obedience training from a young age is certainly recommended.

The Drent does not require extensive grooming, shedding large amounts only twice per year. However, this breed will not be content being stuck inside an apartment all day or performing monotonous repetitive activity– this spaniel-type needs action and contact with his humans! Drents are commonly used in everything from agility and tracking to dog sledding. Keeping training and expertise lively and interesting is key to keeping a happy Drent– so if you love to satisfy your sense of adventure out of doors, a Drent is an excellent choice as a furry friend.
