Is Your Dog a Genius? Keynote Address by Dr. Brian Hare
Dogs are unusual compared to other animals in how they cooperate and communicate with humans, and differences between individual dogs in these abilities can help inform how we select, breed, and train working dogs. Dr. Hare presented research comparing dogs to other species and data from the largest studies of dog emotion and cognition to reach his conclusions.
About the Speaker
Dr. Brian Hare is a core member of the Center of Cognitive Neuroscience, a Professor in Evolutionary Anthropology, and Psychology and Neuroscience at Duke University. He received his PhD from Harvard University in 2004, and in 2005, following his work at the Max Planck Institute in Leipzig, was accorded the Sofia Kovalevskaja Award, Germany’s most prestigious award for scientists under 40. In 2007, Smithsonian Magazine named Dr. Hare one of the top 35 scientists under 36. Dr. Hare has published over 100 scientific papers and his research has received consistent national and international attention. In 2019, Dr. Hare and his research were featured in Steven Speilberg’s documentary series Why We Hate.
He authored the New York Times Bestseller, The Genius of Dogs and co-authored Survival of the Friendliest. Through his work at The Duke Canine Cognition Center, Dr. Hare has led the Dognition project; a website to “Find the Genius in Your Dog”. Participants fill out a detailed questionnaire and Dognition then sends back a cognitive profile of the dog, based on comparisons with other dogs.
