a novel approach to improving the genetic health of dogs

Embark’s mission is to end preventable disease in dogs. We actively seek to partner with health organizations, university researchers, breed clubs, and other groups that share this goal. Many of these groups have contributed decades of work and established sound scientific foundations towards ensuring healthier dogs will be a reality. Our view is that by working together to leverage Embark’s unique capabilities, we can accelerate the pace of discovery and provide actionable results to owners, breeders, and veterinarians.

A Team Dedicated to Canine Health

Embark’s mission was created out of a lifelong passion for dogs by our founding team, who started the company following a ten-year canine research initiative funded by Cornell University, the National Science Foundation, and National Geographic. Ryan and Adam Boyko studied dogs in 40+ countries across six continents; their work resulted in a new understanding of the origin and evolution of dogs, and unique insights into the impact of genetic diversity on canine health. They are joined at Embark by a growing team of scientists and researchers, breeders, community builders, and dog-lovers from many different fields. Ryan is the company’s CEO, while Adam is the Chief Science Officer and also a tenured professor at Cornell University’s College of Veterinary Medicine.

Accurate and Actionable Health Results

Embark is the only dog DNA testing company using a high resolution, research-grade platform that routinely queries over 230,000 genetic markers. This advanced methodology creates research-ready data for every dog that uses our testing kits, enabling cutting-edge research and genetic mapping studies while also archiving genetic raw data for future initiatives. Embark is particularly unique because we provide each of our customers ownership of their dogs’ data. Every dog owner that uses Embark may freely download their dog’s genetic data and share it with their breed club, add it to an existing health database, or even send it to other researchers.

Partnering with Reputable Organizations

To further accelerate achieving our mission, Embark often supports breed clubs and health organizations through our partnership programs. This support can include sharing our methodologies, expertise, data, and samples among other forms of collaboration. Embark’s research partners include Cornell University’s College of Veterinary Medicine, the National Institutes of Health, the Morris Animal Foundation, and many more.

Our core belief is that by working together we can drive discoveries that benefit dogs everywhere. We invite you to join us in our mission to end preventable disease in dogs by encouraging the use of DNA testing among breeders and dog owners and helping them understand how to apply its results. A single Embark DNA test screens for genetic mutations, provides genetic diversity information linked to health outcomes, and contributes to new research dedicated to improving the lives of dogs.
