Canine Leukocyte Adhesion Deficiency Type I, CLADI

What is CLADI?

A rare disorder of white blood cells, this causes increased susceptibility to infections and bleeding tendencies. Affected dogs present with a history of persistent skin and gum infections as well as uncontrollable bleeding from small cuts. Dogs with CLAD Type I can live many years as long as serious infections are treated with antibiotic therapy. It is also crucial that veterinarians performing surgery on CLAD Type I dogs have blood on hand for transfusion.

What are the signs & symptoms that develop in affected dogs?

Affected dogs may have recurrent, severe skin infections (pyoderma), limping (lameness), and/or swollen, bleeding gums (gingivitis). They may also have prominent lymph nodes that are easily felt under the jaw, on the chest, and on the hind legs.

When do signs and symptoms develop?

This disease is typically diagnosed in puppies when they fail to grow, have umbilical infections, and/or swollen lymph nodes. They will also experience chronic infections and/or bleeding following a spay or neuter.

How do vets diagnose this condition?

Genetic or laboratory tests are performed to diagnose this condition.

How is this condition treated?

Currently, treatment for CLADI focuses on symptomatic management. Judicious, chronic antibiotic use is typically required. Blood products will need to be given following a trauma or surgery.
