Epagneul de Pont-Audemer

Known to be calm indoors and enthusiastic in the field, the Épagneul de Pont-Audemer is one of France’s rarest and most distinctive gun dogs. Originating in the marshlands of Normandy near the town of Pont-Audemer, they were bred primarily to hunt waterfowl with the tenacity of a retriever and the elegance of a spaniel. Its spirited personality, unique appearance, and natural working instincts make it a treasured (but little-known) companion among hunters and breed enthusiasts.

Historically rare, the population of Épagneul de Pont-Audemers dropped precipitously after World War II. To ensure the sustainability of the breed, and to avoid excessive inbreeding, the French breed club enabled crossbreeding to other dogs, including an Irish Water Spaniel. Descendants of these dogs are in the Épagneul de Pont Audemer population today.

The characteristic silky topknot and curly coat, along with long feathered ears, give the Épagneul de Pont Audemer an almost whimsical yet noble appearance. Its medium, sturdy frame is designed to push through thick reeds and swim efficiently in cold water. The Épagneul Pont-Audemer is renowned for its cheerful, gentle, and lively disposition. Despite being a dedicated working dog, it’s exceptionally people-oriented and thrives in an environment where it can be close to its family.
