Jämthund

The Jämthund (aka the Swedish Elkhound) is a proud northern spitz bred for strength, courage, and remarkable hunting ability. They were developed to track and hold large game — especially elk (moose), bear, and lynx — making the Jämthund a striking combination of utility, dignity, and companionship.

The Jämthund is a large, athletic spitz with a commanding presence and a beautiful, functional coat — essential for survival in Sweden’s frigid forests. Though a formidable hunter in the field, at home it’s steady, affectionate, and deeply bonded to its family.

The breed’s independence is part of its heritage, but so is its desire to work closely with a trusted human. Jämthunds do well with vigorous exercise,mental stimulation, and meaningful time with their people. They generally dislike isolation and are happiest in homes where they can be active, engaged, and included in everyday life.
