The Saluki is an ancient dog built for running. There are carvings depicting Salukis from 7,000-6,000 B.C. during the Sumerian empire. These dogs are from the Middle East and have therefore encountered many ancient civilizations over thousands of years. They are considered the Royal Dog of Egypt. Nomadic Muslims believed the Saluki was a gift from Allah. Salukis could also be found throughout the Persian empire. These dogs are very fast, which made them phenomenal hunting dogs. Their hearts are proportionally bigger than most other breeds, which allows them to run for very long distances. Salukis still love to run and require regular daily exercise. They can do well in most environments as long as they get that exercise. Since they are sighthounds, it is best to keep them away from smaller animals and leashes are a must. This is a clean, low-shedding breed. Salukis can be quite independent, but they absolutely adore their own people.
