Tornjak
Tornjaks are a breed of dog that has the distinction of being one of the only breeds from Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Serious and strong, Tornjaks were bred in the mountainous regions of Bosnia and Herzegovina to protect livestock. The first written records of a Tornjack is found in 9th-century documents that belong to the Catholic Church, and further mentions of them are found in secular documents in the 12th and then again in the 14th century. It is possible, however, that Tornjaks have been around significantly longer. Archeological evidence has shown that Tornjaks, or dogs that looked quite a bit like them, have existed for nearly 9,000 years!
Unlike many breeds that evolved into pets over the course of the centuries, Tornjaks are still used primarily as guardian dogs for both homes and livestock. But this doesn’t mean that they don’t make loving companions for families! Tornjaks are a protective and intelligent breed. They seem sort of lazy and docile on first impact, as they were bred specifically not to be aggressive to strange people. They are also very intuitive dogs and have a keen sense of who is an intruder and who is a guest.
If you’re looking to add a Tornjak to your life, there are a few things to keep in mind. First of all, Tornjaks are particularly ill-suited to apartment life, and even suburban living with a yard. They are large and accustomed to having a lot of space, so they will not deal well with being cooped up in a city or in an apartment. The ideal home for them is a rural one, where they will have plenty of space to run and opportunities to survey their territory. This is a breed that truly needs a lot of space, and is really only suited for families who live in rural areas.
Tornjaks are generally good with other dogs, especially if socialized with them from an early age, and are naturally protective and gentle with livestock. They can be trained to accept cats, as well.
They are very good with children and truly adore their human family. They are gentle and placid in the home and with their people, but will rise to the occasion if they feel someone they love is being threatened. Otherwise, though, they should be calm and alert and not easily excitable.
