This genetic variant may help lessen the effects of copper buildup in dogs that also carry the copper toxicosis risk variant ATP7B. On its own, it is not known to cause health problems.
A variant in this gene may delay or have no effect on the onset of clinical signs of copper toxicosis in dogs with the ATP7B variant. If your dog has the ATP7B variant, please read more about the age of onset on the ATP7B page.

This mutation was first described in the Labrador Retriever. However, it has recently been studied in the Doberman Pinscher and may also benefit this breed.
Penetrance: This variant has a X-linked complex inheritance. This variant has been shown to decrease copper accumulation in dogs with one or two copies of the ATP7B variant but is more effective in male dogs. However, this variant is not completely protective in either sex.
