Hereditary Ataxia

PNPLA8, Australian Shepherd Variant

This disorder impacts the cerebellum, which helps fine-tune movement, balance, and coordination. When it doesn’t function properly, dogs may appear unsteady, uncoordinated, or have trouble with precise movements.

Clinical signs include a lack of coordination, exaggerated movements, falling, and an inability to stand or walk without support. Tremors have also been reported.

Signs typically develop before two years of age.
