Ichthyosis, ICH2

Ichthyotic dogs typically have large, greasy dandruff flakes, but are not itchy. They often have discoloration of the skin, especially on the abdomen.

As puppies, affected dogs can show signs of scaling. These symptoms can worsen as the dog ages or wax and wane throughout the dog's life.

Examining the characteristic lesions is the first step in diagnosing Ichthyosis. Confirmatory genetic testing and/or skin biopsies can also be performed.

There is no definitive treatment for ichthyosis: typically, ichthyotic dogs are maintained on continuous treatment of mild anti-dandruff shampoos and moisturizing rinses. This is often a chronic and frustrating condition to manage.

Penetrance: This variant has an autosomal recessive inheritance, meaning that dogs must have two copies of the variant to show clinical signs of Ichthyosis.
