Musladin-Lueke Syndrome, MLS

Dogs with MLS typically come to the vet because of severely contracted joints that cause them to walk on their toes, rather than their paw pads. However, due to the effect of the mutation on internal connective tissues, some dogs can also experience seizures.

Signs are often first recognized in puppies.

Clinical signs, genetic testing, and biopsy can be used to diagnose this condition.

Unfortunately, there is no treatment for MLS. However, all but most severe cases can be managed with supportive care.

Talk to your vet about your dog’s MLS result so you can plan appropriate care and monitoring.

Provide a calm environment and avoid strenuous exercise or rough play that could strain tight muscles or joints.

Keep your dog’s living space safe with rugs or mats for traction and soft bedding for comfort.

The severity of this condition can vary. Some dogs live comfortably with mild stiffness, while others may develop more serious complications. Work closely with your vet to help your dog stay relaxed, mobile, and engaged in daily life.

This mutation was first described in the Beagle.

Penetrance: This mutation has an autosomal recessive inheritance, meaning that dogs must have two copies of the mutation in order to show clinical signs.
