Collie (Scottish-Type)

Collie (Scottish-Type)

Scottish-Type Collies, also called Old-Time Scotch Collies, are landrace collies bred first and foremost to excel at their work. Formalized breeds such as the Collie and Shetland Sheepdog were developed from this original landrace population. While these dogs are happy to herd, they’re quite versatile and also enjoy sports such as flyball and agility.

Fun Fact

Because the Scotch Collie does not have a rigid, formalized breed standard, they can vary quite a bit in their appearance, ranging from around 35 to 80 pounds.

Height

Male: 19-25in

Female: 17-23in

Weight

Male: 35-80lb

Female: 32-70lb

Highly trainable and steady, the Scotch Collie makes a great working dog and companion for livestock owners who need a herder. These dogs are considered a landrace-- a type of dog bred for a purpose, but not to a set of breed standards. Scotch Collies are the dogs many breeds were developed from, such as the Collie and Shetland Sheepdog. Given the athleticism and intelligence of the Scotch Collie, it's no surprise that they're so cherished by their people.

In addition to being great herding dogs, the Scotch Collie can excel at canine sports if you're looking for an agility, flyball, or obedience dog. These dogs will need space to roam and ways to exercise their clever minds, so if you don't have sheep that need herding, becoming involved in a sport is a great way to spend time with your pup and make them very happy!
