Black Russian Terrier
The Black Russian Terrier originated as a military and police dog during the time of the Soviet Union. Their intelligence and thick coat allowed them to thrive in their role under the Red Army. Today you are more likely to find them in the suburbs guarding your house.

About this Breed
The Black Russian Terrier is a hardy working dog that was born out of the Cold War. Soviet Union scientists were laid with the task of creating the ultimate guard and police dog that could thrive during their frigid winters. They definitely succeeded and created a wonderful dog. These big guys are not recommended for first time dog owners though. Blackies can be aloof and reserved, so they require a lot of socialization from the time they are puppies. They thrive best when they have a job and aren’t meant for apartment living. Their weatherproof coat needs consistent brushing in order to prevent matting. This is a highly intelligent and sensitive breed that does best with a firm owner.
