Fun Fact
A scruffy terrier-type stray captured the hearts of American soldiers in France during WWII, marching with them to Germany. He charmed everyone with his endearing looks and personality and was named “Original Peter”. After the war, Original Peter was adopted and went on to become the foundation sire of the Kromfohrländer, the breed that still carries his unmistakable spirit today.

About the Kromfohrlander
Kromfohrländers are small dogs from Germany. They're unlike many other European breeds in that they were not originally bred as hunting dogs. In fact, Kromfohrländers were created specifically to be companion animals, and they are definitely well-suited to the task!
Originating in post World War II Germany, Kromfohrländers are also unusual in that they can trace their origins to one specific dog. A dog named “ Original Peter,” who was found in France by American troops during World War II, was brought over to Germany and separated from his American rescuers. He was subsequently found by a German woman named Ilsa Schleifenbaum, who took him in and kept him as a pet. She bred him to a number of female dogs in her town, and kept the puppies and began creating her own breed- all descended from Original Peter! Over the next 50 or so years, Kromfohrländers began being recognized by European and American Kennel Clubs. While still not fully recognized, they’ve certainly gained a lot of ground since the 1940’s.
Original Peter must have been a pretty special dog, if American soldiers went through all that trouble to rescue him and bring him with them as they traipsed across post-war Europe. He was probably exceptionally friendly, and this trait has been carried on into new generations of Kromfohrländers. They are very much “people dogs,” as they love their families fiercely and hate being separated from them. They make great family dogs, as they also love children, and get along well with other dogs and other pets. Another great thing about Kromfohrländers is their size- they are small enough and adaptable enough to be very happy living in an apartment, so make wonderful city dogs. They would also enjoy the space and the freedom of the suburbs or a rural home.
The only drawback to Kromfohrländers is that they won’t be an easy breed to find outside of Germany. If you really have your heart set on a Kromfohrländer, be prepared to do a lot of research before finding a breeder. Then, be prepared to be put on a puppy waiting list until a suitable puppy is born. If you’re willing to put forth the effort and potentially wait a while, Kromfohrländers will absolutely enrich your life! They are happy, loving and wonderfully suited to family life. They will absolutely not disappoint, and should be considered (despite the fact that they’re still pretty rare!) -
