Cockapoo

Cockapoos, also called Cockapoodles, are a mix of two dog breeds: the Cocker Spaniel and the Poodle. While not recognized as breeds by the American Kennel Club (AKC), they can be registered through the Cockapoo Club of America. 

Cockapoos, like all dogs, are susceptible to genetic health risks that can be treated or managed when identified. An Embark dog DNA test screens for genetic health risks affecting Cockapoos. The bottom of this guide lists breed-specific conditions we test for.

Even Cockapoo puppies from the same litter can look different from each other and can have various combinations of physical traits:  

• Size. A Cockapoo’s size depends on the type of Poodle parent. Breeding with a Toy Poodle will result in a Miniature Cockapoo while breeding with a Standard Poodle will create a Maxi Cockapoo. However, Standard Poodles are rarely used to breed Cockapoos. Miniature Poodles are most commonly used to breed medium Cockapoos. 
• Weight. An average size Cockapoo weighs around 15 pounds with a height of around 14 inches at the shoulder blades.
• Tail and ears. Cockapoos have long, floppy ears that can be prone to infection. It is important to have their ears checked and cleaned regularly to prevent bacterial infections. Signs of an ear infection include redness, unpleasant odor, swelling, and frequent head-shaking.

The Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) tests pet food to make sure it is nutritionally balanced and complete. Look for dog food that’s AAFCO-approved and has “balanced and complete” on the packaging.

Cockapoos are prone to obesity and should generally be fed a high-quality diet that contains a lot of protein, some carbohydrates, and some healthy fats. Fresh water should be offered each day in a clean bowl. 

A high-quality diet will also contain essential vitamins and minerals. Pup parents should consult with a veterinarian or canine nutritionist to make sure they’re providing the best diet for their dog.

Cockapoos don’t require a lot of bathing. However, their coats do require regular maintenance. Their silky coat should be brushed two to three times a week to prevent matting. It’s important to choose and use a dog brush designed for your dog’s specific coat type. Cockapoos can have short, medium, or long coats. Their coats can be straight, wavy, or long. Their coat is usually odorless and sheds minimally.

Cockapoos should be taken to a professional groomer every six weeks to get their coat and claws clipped. Keeping their coat trimmed prevents matting and prevents hair from covering their eyes. 

Cockapoos enjoy playtime with their family or with other dogs at a dog park. Activities Cockapoos enjoy include:

• Jogging
• Long walks
• Fetch or other energetic games
• Interaction with other dogs 
• Positive reinforcement training

This breed combination tends to be very intelligent and easy to train. They respond very well to positive reinforcement or reward training. 

Rewards can include food, physical attention, and praise. When using treats for rewards, break the treat up into multiple pieces to prevent overfeeding. Using part of the dog’s normal diet is also a good way to reward them.
