  • History and origin

The Estrela Mountain Dog, also known as the Cão da Serra da Estrela, has a long history in Portugal. It was originally bred to protect livestock in the rugged and remote Estrela Mountains. This ancient breed was used to guard sheep and cattle from predators like wolves and bears, and its natural guarding instincts made it indispensable to Portuguese shepherds. The breed is thought to have evolved from ancient mastiffs and herding dogs brought to the Iberian Peninsula by the Phoenicians. Despite nearly disappearing in the early 20th century, dedicated breeding programs have helped preserve this remarkable breed.
  • Appearance

The Estrela Mountain Dog is a large, powerful breed with a robust and muscular build, designed for strength and endurance. It has a dense, weather-resistant double coat, which can be either long or short, and typically comes in shades of fawn, wolf-gray, or brindle, often with white markings on the chest and paws. The breed’s broad head features a strong, square muzzle, dark eyes, and medium-sized, triangular ears that fold slightly forward. Its body is well-proportioned with a deep chest, a strong back, and a tail that is carried high and often curled over its back.
  • Temperament and personality

The Estrela Mountain Dog is a loyal, protective, and intelligent companion, known for its natural guarding instincts. While it is generally calm and composed, it is always alert and protective of its family and territory. This breed tends to be reserved around strangers but is affectionate and gentle with its family. Early socialization and training are essential to ensure the Estrela Mountain Dog is well-mannered and responsive to commands, as its independent nature can make it a challenge for first-time dog owners. This breed thrives when given a job to do. While it excels at guarding and protecting, it also requires mental stimulation and physical activity to stay happy and healthy. Regular walks, runs, and play sessions are essential. While it is often content to relax at home with its family, the Estrela Mountain Dog is best suited for active households or properties where it can engage in its natural guarding duties.
