Canine Multiple System Degeneration

Brain and Spinal Cord

A progressive neurologic disease, SERAC1 is necessary for mitochondrial function. Mitochondria are cellular structures that supply the cell with energy (ATP) and have also been linked to cerebellar disease in humans.

  • Signs and symptoms

Affected dogs can begin showing gait abnormalities and head tremors. This progresses to difficulty walking towards the end stages of the disease. However, they show no behavioral abnormalities and appear to be aware of their surroundings and companions.

Signs are first apparent around 3 months of age.

Unless a genetic basis is suspected due to the age, breed, or history of the dog, diagnostics must be performed to rule out infectious, inflammatory, or neoplastic causes.

  • Treatment

There is no treatment for this disorder. Certain medications may be prescribed to control symptoms.

  • What to do if your dog is at risk

    Actions

    • Talk to your vet about your dog’s progressive neuronal abiotrophy result so you can plan ongoing care and monitoring.
    • Watch for signs such as unsteady movement, changes in coordination, or difficulty walking, and contact your vet if you notice any of these.
    • Keep your dog’s environment calm and consistent. Use rugs or mats to prevent slipping and help them move safely around the home.
    • As this condition can progress over time, supportive care and a safe, predictable routine can help keep your dog comfortable and engaged with their family.
