Southeast Asian Island Village Dog

Dogs accompanied humans on some of their most fantastic voyages across the Pacific, spreading throughout the islands of Southeast Asia and Oceania. These dogs served as companions, guards, and food animals. Their descendents, mixed with more recent European (dog) arrivals, live on today in islands dotting the Pacific, where they live amongst people, beaches, and palm trees.

Fun Fact

Poi dogs have been used until recent times in Hawaiian as spiritual protectors of children - and as food. In fact dogs have a long history of serving as food animals in Oceania, given the lack of other large mammals. Throughout history, it seems like each island tended to specialize in either dogs or pigs, but generally not both!
