Thanksgiving is all about celebrating family. And if you’re like most Embark pet parents, your dog may actually be your #1 favorite family member! So while you’re zooming around cooking, hosting, and trying to avoid life advice from uncle Bob, make sure you don’t drop the ball on your BFF. Here are a few easy ways to make the holiday fun and safe for your pup, start to finish.

Make a quick walk exciting
Busy day ahead. And chances are, you’re still a little zonked from hosting friends and family the night before. (Friendsgiving anyone?) A super quick walk may be in store, but you can still make it fun. Hide a few treats around the yard for your pup to ‘discover.’ Sprint up the block and back together for a change of pace. Or just briefly intercept a neighbor walking their dog. Instant playdate. Always a blast.

Prevent dog FOMO while you cook

You’ve got your hands full in the kitchen. (Why does everyone just bring chips and wine?) Let your pup in on some yummy goodness too, with these super simple, no-bake treats. Hint: You can even hide their supplements inside.
No-Bake Peanut Butter and Oat Rolls
Ingredients
- ¾ C natural, unsalted and xylitol-free peanut butter
- 1 ¼ C oats
- ¼ C water
- ¼ tsp cinnamon
Prep
Mix the peanut butter, water, and cinnamon until smooth. Stir in the oats until combined. Roll into bite-size balls and refrigerate for 1 hour. Boom. Store the treats in an airtight container for up to a week.

Keep it fun: Stream the National Dog Show

This guaranteed conversation starter is also a great way to bond with your dog amid the hubbub. Grab two squeaky toys so you can both cast your votes for Best in Show. Show off your expert knowledge (“ah, the Standard Poodle! Beautiful, elegant, smart. But not nearly as smart as you!”) Then explain to the guests how your dog could easily do all those tricks. Just maybe later.

Avoid counter-surfing hazards

To keep your pup safe this holiday, prep wisely and stay ahead of table scraps—think “mise en place,” but for pet safety. Many Thanksgiving dishes are harmful or even toxic for dogs. If your dog eats any of these foods, call your vet right away.

Cozy up with a dog-friendly movie

Switch it up this year. Instead of football, why not watch a movie that your dog (and your guests) will love. Here are 3 faves (each one is a pet-parenting touchdown).
- Lady and the Tramp —A Cocker Spaniel and a street-smart Supermutt find true love.
- Hachi: A Dog’s Tale—A real tearjerker about a loyal Akita and his human.
- Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey—Cross the country with an American Bulldog.

Give your pup extra Thanksgiving cuddles

You’re a great pet parent. But before you drift off, take a minute to reflect on what your dog can teach you about Thanksgiving. Like how to enjoy the simple things. Share what you have. And live in the moment. Insights that bring you even closer to your dog. And the best thing? There’s so much more to know.
Happy Thanksgiving!
