After tragic events in his early years, including a gunshot wound and a car accident, young puppy Rex was near death. Thanks to a kind-hearted volunteer, he survived. He now lives in California and leads a full and happy life with his adoptive family.

Rex took an Embark Dog DNA Test to find out what his breed mix is. Keep reading to discover the mystery breeds that make up this sweet, three-legged dog.

Underdog Rex beats the odds

Leanna (Lilly) won an Embark Breed ID Test through a sweepstakes, inspired by Disney and Pixar’s Inside Out 2, that Embark ran to help people know their dogs inside and out. Lilly used the test to learn more about Rex, her friend Marianne’s dog.

“Our friend Marianne volunteers all of her time at the local Humane Society. She has a rescue dog named Rex. He’s a mixed-breed dog, so he’s a little bit of everything. We’re so excited to find out what makes Rex, Rex.”

“Rex’s story is quite interesting,” Lilly tells us. “It starts off very sad. When he was only three months old, he was shot by a neighbor and then hit by a car. He was almost gone. The owner surrendered him, and due to the injuries, he was going to be put down.”

Luckily, a guardian angel was on his side in the form of a volunteer at the shelter. She took him in and watched over him as he recovered from the amputation of his hind leg. With her help, he made a full recovery.

“Now, Rex is a lively two-year-old dog who is happy, healed, and loves to chew through everything,” Lilly says.

Rex takes an Embark Dog DNA Test

On a sunny summer morning, Lilly met up with Marianne and Rex at a local dog park. She and Marianne swabbed his mouth and mailed his DNA sample from a nearby post office.

Genetic breed ancestry results for a dog named Rex showing 38.7% American Pit Bull Terrier, 21.9% German Shepherd Dog, 14.7% Labrador Retriever, 11.8% Great Pyrenees, and 12.9% Supermutt.

His Supermutt ancestry may contain DNA from the Australian Shepherd, Siberian Husky, and American Bulldog. These breeds all contribute to making Rex the unique dog he is!
